The picture-perfect Guadeloupe archipelago, better known as Saint Marie from the BBC's Death in Paradise, is the pinnacle of authentic Caribbean design. The area, a French overseas territory made up of six inhabited and six unoccupied islands, exudes a vibrant French Caribbean flair. The islands in the archipelago are frequently likened to St Lucia because of their lush volcanic hills and white sand beaches, but with the added benefit of having fewer tourists. The two adjacent main islands, Grande-Terre, and Basse-Terre, connected by a decent link road, are the most populous of the six main islands. Guadeloupe's infrastructure and roads are all quite lovely, so we always advise renting a car to do some touring while you're there.

The south coast of Grande-Terre, which is protected, is where you'll find many of the most excellent beaches and dining establishments. The area also has great snorkelling because of the area's abundant coral reefs. Pointe-a-Pitre, the island's capital, is located just up the coast. It is well-known for its bustling local markets and serves as the launchpad for boat cruises around the nearby islands. If you want to spot some celebrities, the cast and crew of Death in Paradise typically stay on the north shore. Those seeking an even more off-the-beaten-path adventure might travel to the thick rainforest in Basse-south. Terre's Iles des Saintes and Marie-Galante, two tiny offshore islands of Guadeloupe, are both excellent day getaways from the main island. Enjoy the pristine beaches of Iles des Saintes and learn about the history of the Caribbean plantations on Marie-Galante, which transports you to the Caribbean in the eighteenth century.
